Policy Overview #

The Norfolk Childcare Company LTD is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for the children in our care. As such, we have a strict policy prohibiting smoking, drinking, and drug use on the premises. We understand that this policy may be difficult for some individuals, but the well-being and safety of the children in our care is our top priority.

The intention of this Policy is to: #

  • Establish clear and consistent boundaries for staff regarding the use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco
  • Implement procedures for addressing violations and addressing any suspected violations of this policy
  • Provide guidance to staff on the appropriate use of prescription medication while on duty, as well as managing any associated side effects.
  • To protect children, parents and staff wherever possible from second-hand smoke.

Who is this policy aimed at? #

This policy applies to all The Norfolk Childcare Company LTD employees, Volunteers, students, temporary staff, or anyone working for or on behalf of The Norfolk Childcare Company LTD.

Where does this Policy Apply? #

  • Any location The Norfolk Childcare Company LTD operates

Smoking & Vaping #

Smoking is strictly prohibited on all of the company’s premises, including outdoor areas such as the garden and car park. Staff members are not provided with designated smoking breaks and are expected to refrain from smoking while on the property.

If staff members wish to smoke during unpaid breaks, they must do so away from the nursery’s premises. To minimise exposure of the children to smoke, staff members are required to change out of their uniforms or wear a coat over the top of their uniform, thoroughly wash their hands, and ensure that no trace of smoke odour remains on their clothes before returning to the nursery. Management will closely monitor adherence to these measures.

Parents Smoking & Vaping #

We kindly request that all parents refrain from smoking or vaping while on nursery premises in order to maintain a safe and healthy environment for our children and staff.

Our nursery serves children with varying health conditions and needs and we want to ensure that their well-being is protected. If any parent is observed smoking or vaping on nursery grounds, they will be asked to extinguish their cigarette or vape, or leave the premises to finish.

Staff Prescription Medication #

It is imperative that prescription and over-the-counter medications are securely stored in a designated medication cabinet when needed during the day; otherwise, it must be locked away in the staff room, away from the reach of children.

It is the individual’s responsibility to ensure proper storage and handling of these substances. Misuse of these medications, including legal highs, is strictly prohibited and any violations of this policy will result in disciplinary action.

Furthermore, any staff members taking medication that may impair their ability to provide care for children or perform their duties, must inform their manager immediately, without delay.

Drugs and Alcohol  #

The company has a zero-tolerance policy for staff members who appear to be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs while on duty. Any staff member in such a state will be asked to leave the premises immediately, and disciplinary proceedings may be initiated.

Additionally, if there are concerns about a staff member’s use of drugs or alcohol outside of working hours that may impact their ability to care for children, the company will review the situation in accordance with our safeguarding and child welfare policy.

The company will not permit any individual on the premises who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs.

The company may request that a staff member undergoes a drug or alcohol test if there is reasonable suspicion of drug or alcohol use. Participation in such testing is voluntary, however, refusing to participate in a test may result in disciplinary action.

Breach of Policy #

Any member of staff, student or volunteer found to be in breach of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action as a breach of this policy and our safeguarding policy. Any breach could result in termination of employment.
